A delicately woven together network of processes, smart technologies for traffic assist transport employees as well as commuters and drivers to control traffic flow and efficiency. Intelligent traffic systems can adjust the controls of traffic lights and onramp meters for freeways as well as bus rapid transit lanes. They also employ advanced IoT hardware and routers as well as cellular technology and mobile networks. They can also help forecast shifts in traffic demands and offer a variety of real-time information to road users.

An excellent example is the traffic signal system that is adaptive in Pittsburgh. When Carnegie Mellon University (CMU) professor Stephen Smith installed his first few traffic signals for experimentation in a crowded area of the city’s East Liberty, he saw immediate results: Drivers travelled 25 percent more efficiently and spent 40 percent less time in traffic jams than they had before.

The system works by capturing data from sensors which monitor traffic patterns and adjust their timing on-the-fly. It also detects pedestrians near intersections and gives them enough time to safely cross the street. The sensors then transmit their raw technologytraffic.com/2020/05/01/modern-traffic-technologies-by-board-room/ data to a central center where it’s processed by artificial intelligent and then sent back to the intersections using 5G-enabled cell networks.

These systems are also able to permit better, more accurate simulation of risk-minimizing scenarios that a human traffic manager could not manage and all in real time. This is a big step towards Vision Zero, a goal of safe driving where both vehicles and humans share the road with no collisions.
